Saint Luke’s Health System- East ASC Expansion

Saint Luke's Health System (SLHS) was expanding its ambulatory surgery center in Lee's Summit, MO, adding 114,000 square feet of new clinical space built to support high-acuity surgical procedures.

With 8 operating rooms, pre-op and post-op areas, and a wide range of support spaces at the center of the project, every mechanical, electrical, and plumbing system had to perform precisely from day one. Getting there required a commissioning partner that understood both the complexity of healthcare construction and the operational standards SLHS expects in its facilities.

5BY5 Engineers was brought on to provide comprehensive commissioning services across all MEP equipment in the new facility. Our ongoing relationship with SLHS made us a natural fit for the project, and the scope aligned directly with our strengths in medical facility commissioning. Working alongside McCarthy Construction, IMEG Corp., and P1 Group, 5BY5 verified performance across 4 new air handling units, hundreds of VAV boxes, and the critical pressure, temperature, and humidity control systems required for surgical environments. The operating rooms received particular attention, as the control sequences needed to deliver precise conditioned air within tight tolerances to protect both patients and staff throughout every procedure.

One of the more demanding aspects of the project was managing the transition between control systems. The team was simultaneously decommissioning the existing controls for that area of the facility while integrating a new control system into the broader campus infrastructure. Achieving that level of coordination without disrupting ongoing operations required careful sequencing and close collaboration between all parties on site. Getting the operating room control sequences properly tuned was a process that demanded precision testing and real-time adjustments to confirm that temperature and humidity delivery met the exacting requirements of surgical care.

The finished facility is a high-functioning ambulatory surgery center that the owner, design team, and construction team are all proud of.
